Research shows people who are treated at home recover at the same rate or faster than those treated in hospital. The NHS delivered on its goal to roll out 10,000 virtual ward beds by the end of Sept. Virtual ward beds are for patients who can get treatment for illnesses such as COPD, heart failure or frailty conditions at home. Patients are cared for by clinicians who can provide blood tests, prescribe medication or administer fluids through an IV drip. They’re reviewed daily with a home or virtual visit, as well as the use of technology like apps, wearables and other medical devices so staff can check in and monitor their recovery.
