The idea for Virtual Hallway came from two doctors looking to have specialist input earlier on in the course of a patient's illness. It's essentially a phone consultation platform that allows primary care providers to gain rapid access to a specialist for advice. The software doesn't directly alleviate the family doctor shortage but the owners claim it removes existing pressure points from within the healthcare system. They say the web-based platform is growing rapidly, adding that it works much faster than an office-based consultation. About 500 primary care providers and over 50 specialists are using Virtual Hallway for about 100 weekly consultations.
