N.S. expands trial of automated reminder calls to prevent no-shows for diagnostic imaging

Facilities in Cape Breton, Antigonish and Guysborough counties dealt with over 4,600 no-shows for scheduled diagnostic imaging appointments last year, resulting in unused appointment times and inefficient use of staffing and equipment. This included over 1,000 no-shows for ultrasound appointments at Cape Breton Regional Hospital (CBRH). Since June, patients scheduled for ultrasounds at CBRH receive automated phone calls in the days leading up to their appointment. In 2023, the system will be expanded to patients having CTs or MRIs at facilities across Cape Breton. The computerized voice recording reminds the date, time and location of the appointment. It also reminds patients to follow the instructions provided in their booking notice and provides a phone number should they need to reach the department.
