In response to a national shortage of physicians who can administer anesthesia during surgeries, Family Practice Anesthetists (FPA) are being used in Ont. and B.C. They’re family physicians who are certified to administer anesthesia during surgery in less complex surgical cases, keeping anesthesiology specialists available for more complex cases. The two-month pilot in Yarmouth will allow for two FPAs to support scheduled surgical lists and on-call services for obstetrics and EDs. They’ll work alongside a certified anesthesiologist from Ont. to oversee the project.
