Ont. to build medical school focused on family doctors

It’s the first medical school in the country with a mandate for family doctors. York University’s medical school will be based in Vaughan, Ont., and will focus specifically on the next generation of family physicians. The university was found to be financially at risk due to its declining domestic enrolment and an overreliance on international students, particularly from India and China. The communities of York, Simcoe and Muskoka in particular are all struggling with shortages of family doctors. Doctors in Ont. say medical students aren’t entering family medicine due to lower pay and too many admin tasks.
