It’s part of the government’s push to increase community care options and ease health system pressures. While midwives say the step is welcome, they add government regulations are still preventing them from practicing within their full scope. They’ve pushed for the government to remove those lists entirely, as well as the list of drugs they can prescribe and allow midwives to order the full range of tests and medications used in pregnancy and post-partum care. The midwives say further expansions would allow clients to receive care quicker and would eliminate unnecessary doctor and hospital visits.
