The province’s Financial Accountability Office (FAO) warns that an additional $6.9 billion of planned health spending over the next three years isn't enough to keep up to keep up with a growing and aging population and the additional pressure the healthcare system that this will bring. The FAO said the drivers of health sector spending, the aging and growing population, and inflation, will grow by an average of 4.3% annually, which surpasses the province’s planned 2.9% growth in spending on existing programs. Health sector spending is the largest expense item in Ontario's provincial budget, projected at $57.9 billion for 2017-18, accounting for 42% of all provincial program spending.
