London, Ont. EMS officials are asking hospitals to change and improve the way nurses intervene to bring patients into the city’s emergency rooms. Paramedics in the region are spending thousands of hours stranded with patients waiting to get into overcrowded ERs. Any time greater than 30 minutes spent by a paramedic crew at the hospital ER is considered an offload delay. These delays at hospital ERs aren't new, as they were one of the reasons London Health Sciences Centre embarked on a project to streamline care using methods made popular by automaker Toyota. But instead of improving, data from paramedics show delays more than doubled since 2015, including a 45% jump from 2016 to 2017. Paramedics are calling for officials to make those in the system more accountable for delays.
