The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s (WRHA) plans for phase two of the Healing our Health System program revolve around consolidating mental health services and a surgery program. Mental health programs will be centralized at three hospitals by the end of 2018 while surgeries will be spread primarily among four hospitals. In total, the 141 nurses involved in the overhaul will be offered a chance to work in similar departments. The province said it hopes to stay away from layoffs. Construction is underway to create more mental health treatment space in one ED and two new mental health units are in the final stages of construction at one hospital. So far in the reorganization, three EDs have closed, with two converted to urgent care centres. One 24-hour urgent care centre was closed and converted to a community intravenous therapy clinic.
