In 2017, the Canadian Association of Optometrists warned of a looming "vision crisis" due to Canada's aging population, as seniors 65 and older are projected to make up 20% of the population by 2024. The Eyeglasses Project, a collaboration between Douglas College, the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House and the Richmond Chinatown Lions Club in Vancouver, brings together optometrists and other eye care professionals to help the vulnerable get access to eye examinations and prescription eyeglasses. The pilot project will see approximately 50 seniors provided with free eye examinations and new prescription eyeglasses. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the demand for basic needs and services in the community and to inspire others to get involved.
