As the province reports patients with complex care needs are receiving more timely and effective care, the number of Accountable Care Units (ACUs) in Regina and Saskatoon is growing. In ACUs, the physician and members of the care team meet with every patient and their family members each day to discuss plans for care in the hospital and discharge. The province is now adding its fifth (ACU) in Regina, with preparations underway in Saskatoon to add to more units early in 2018. Following the launch in April of the ACU at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, data from the province shows the length of stay for the unit is currently 12.2% below the previous average. In Regina, there was a 15% decrease in length of stay reported on the pilot ACU at the Pasqua Hospital. In the Medical Surveillance Unit at the Pasqua, 105% more patients received specialized care following its launch.
