A report from the B.C. Seniors Advocate suggests seniors living in privately-run care homes are:

  • Thirty-two per cent more likely to be sent to the emergency department;
  • Thirty-four per cent more likely to be hospitalized;
  • Likely to stay in hospital 32%; and
  • Fifty-four per cent more likely to die in hospital.

The report suggests that if the rates seen at private facilities were more like those in public care homes, up to 42 hospital beds would be freed up everyday in B.C.
