Alberta Innovates, the province’s innovation Crown corporation, announced $9.5 million in funding to develop technology that can create better care, support doctors and improve diagnoses and treatment. Calgary-based Mikata Health is developing an AI scribe technology intending to automate and streamline paperwork and data entry for doctors and other clinicians. Other funded projects include:

  • Five projects at the University of Alberta will explore how to use AI to improve 811 Health Link, better predict opioid overdoses and streamline diagnostic imaging;
  • Another five projects at the University of Calgary will look into using AI to identify and treat stroke patients, prevent hospital-transmitted infection outbreaks and understand the social determinants of health; and
  • Private company Symbiotic AI is developing an AI support tool for patients with coronary artery disease.
