The model, known as blended capitation, will be an alternative to the current fee-for-service system, under which payment depends completely on how many services the doctor provides. The provincial government says the new model will allow for two streams of remuneration for family doctors:

  1. A base payment for a standard basket of services provided to each patient, with the amount is adjusted by age, gender and complexity of care; and
  2. Additional fee-for-service payments available for extra services provided outside of the defined basket of services.

A similar model is in place in B.C. and Alta.
