The Coalition for Seniors and Nursing Home Residents’ Rights says the number of New Brunswickers waiting for a nursing home bed continued to climb this year, with 806 on the list as of Aug., compared to 756 in Jan. The rise is despite at least 250 nursing home beds sitting empty across the province, with most unfilled due to staff shortages. Of those 806 waiting to get into nursing homes, 461 were in hospital. The provincial government says it’s addressing the issue of staffing shortages and bed vacancies by adding staff to hospital discharge teams to find solutions for individuals seeking care, investing in the creation of additional nursing homes and beds and working with facility operators to get seniors in beds quickly.
