As part of the province’s ongoing health reform, a steering committee was formed in Sept. with front-line nurses, nursing leadership, union representatives, Horizon human resources and schedulers to examine the feasibility of establishing a self-scheduling system for nurses. It identified a common theme among nurses, that of scheduling flexibility. It’s planning to begin a self-scheduling pilot on a small number of nursing units. The committee will monitor results, providing guidance and feedback to the unit responsible for the pilot. It also intends to develop a toolkit for other units to use following the project’s evaluation.
