The U of T reports almost 16% of households across 10 provinces experienced some degree of food insecurity in the year before 2021, with little change since 2019. During this period, Que. had the lowest rate of household food insecurity at 13%, Alta. was highest among the provinces at 20.3% while N.B. stood second highest at 19%. People living in Que. were less than half as likely as those in Alta. to experience severe food insecurity, which includes hunger and is strongly associated with increased healthcare spending, poor health outcomes and premature death. U of T researchers say Que. did especially well addressing severe food insecurity with policy structures and payments for low-income households that differ from other provinces, including income support, workplace benefits and childcare.
