The Food Rx program, a collaboration between FoodShare Toronto and the University Health Network, delivers a box of fresh fruits and vegetables to Torontonians who would otherwise struggle to put healthy food on the table. The program came about as a response to the pandemic which led to a spike in Canadians facing food insecurity. A box of food is delivered to participants every two weeks. Many of the Food Rx participants are newcomers, women, racialized people and Indigenous people. Statistics Canada showed about one in 10 Canadians had difficulty buying food regularly during the second wave of the pandemic, while Food Banks Canada found 23% of Canadians reported eating less than they believe they should because there wasn't enough money for food. Dalhousie University estimates Canadians will see prices go up by five to seven percent this year.
