UNB found the mobile X-ray costs the health system about a third less than a traditional home-to-hospital transfer. The Radiography on Wheels Project also saves nursing home residents from the stress of long trips and eases pressure off the hospital system. The van to brings X-ray services to 13 nursing homes and special care homes in Saint John and can be at a home within an hour of receiving a call. The project’s medical radiation technologist only needs to spend 15 minutes with a patient to take an X-ray. It prevented about 275 home-to-hospital transfers since May. There are other mobile X-ray services in Canada but this is the first in the Atlantic provinces.
