Chicago-based Advocate Health Care's hospitals saw a nearly 50% reduction in readmission rates after implementing a nutrition care program for malnourished surgical patients. A study exploring how nutrition care affected at-risk or malnourished medical and surgical patients found those who received nutrition care not only had lower hospital readmission rates, their average hospital stay decreased by 2.7 days. The health system added that by prioritizing nutrition, providers can improve the recovery process and deliver better value for patients and families.
