ECRI Institute’s Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2018 highlights how missed alarms may result from inappropriately configured secondary notifications devices and systems for hospitals. In response, this Physician-Physician Alliance for Health Safety podcast highlights patient safety and the right and wrong ways to use continuous surveillance monitoring. To provide an example of how a hospital reduced alarm fatigue, a doctor from New Jersey’s Virtua Memorial Hospital explains it was able to do distinguish between actionable and non-actionable alarms, as well as create a notification system that escalated the alarms when they occurred. The hospital created algorithms using parameters from portable respiratory monitors which helped identify events that were clinically significant for its patients.
