The eHealth Centre of Excellence will roll out the one-year pilot project to about 100 doctors and nurse practitioners across the region in early 2018, with the hope of expanding it to more practices. The software includes secure messaging, video conferencing and audio through an app or website. Patients can use it to enter their information, get triaged virtually, then see their providers if necessary. Over the next year, the Centre will work with the Ontario Telemedicine Network to further develop and test the system. Other digital tools the Centre launched include an electronic referral system and a consultation system that allows primary care providers to electronically send a question to a specialist. It’s currently developing a decision-support tool for family doctors to help decrease opioid use.
