The New Brunswick Health Council (NBHC) publicly released an article on patients’ experience with hospital care in New Brunswick leveraging the results from the 2023 edition of its Hospital Acute Care Survey.
The article explores the shared experiences of close to 5 000 citizens regarding their stay in a New Brunswick hospital. The Hospital Acute Care Survey was conducted between June and November 2023 and focused on the experience of patients in acute care settings.
"This survey provides valuable insights to both citizens and healthcare leaders, shedding light on the strengths and weaknesses of our hospital care. By understanding these areas, we can work together to improve the overall quality of care for New Brunswick residents."- Stéphane Robichaud, Chief Executive Officer.
The NBHC has drawn the following key observations from the results of the 2023 edition:
- Six key factors, or drivers, largely influence overall patient experience during hospital stays in New Brunswick.
- Efforts are required on all six factors to improve overall patient experience. Moreover, some factors specific to patient-centred care require particular attention.
- When it comes to the 6 Key factors that influence patient experience, zone 4 seems to be showing better results than the provincial average and zone 5 worse.
- In general, the overall experience of patients varies by type of care received: surgical, maternity, or medical care.
The six key factors include: emotional support, internal coordination of care, information received about conditions and treatments, communication with nurses, pain control and safety.
"These findings highlight areas where improvement is possible. By focusing on all six key factors, especially those related to patient-centred care, we can create a more positive and supportive environment for New Brunswickers. The regional variations also underscore the importance of tailored approaches to address specific needs in different areas" adds Robichaud.
