Hospitals in Ontario's Waterloo Wellington LHIN are undertaking a five-month pilot program designed to get pediatric patients to mental healthcare more quickly. To do this, diversion teams will be deployed to assess the mental health of children and youth in ERs. If the patient doesn't require hospitalization, they'll be connected with appropriate mental health supports in the community. The diversion program is meant to reduce pressure on the region's 13-bed inpatient mental health unit for children and youth.
