Public health experts repeat that among OECD countries, Canada has one of the highest prevalence rates of obesity. Despite all that the country is doing to address the contributing lifestyle factors, they state public health goals are hard to reach and nowhere near close to targets. They implore health workers to speak up and get involved to help improve neighbourhoods. They believe urban planners can also assist with determining the health impact of land-use and transport decisions by working with public health departments. Such collaborations are already happening in some cities that use urban planners to examine the impact of developments on the health of a community and to encourage more active transportation and alter existing ones to the same end.
