About

This indicator is a composite percentage score, based on 2 individual questions in the survey, that represents how well hospital staff communicated with acute care patients about new medications.

Source

New Brunswick Health Council, Hospital Acute Care Survey

Calculations

This indicator is based on respondents who said 'yes' to the question 'During this hospital stay, were you given any medicine that you had not taken before?'. This indicator is calculated by dividing the total number of 'always' responses to the questions 'Before giving you any new medicine, how often did hospital staff tell you what the medicine was for?' and 'Before giving you any new medicine, how often did hospital staff describe possible side effects in a way you could understand?', by the total number of responses given as 'always, usually, sometimes or never' for these 2 questions.
