About

This indicator is the percentage of acute care patients who reported that they always received explanations about new medications.

Source

New Brunswick Health Council, Hospital Acute Care Survey

Calculations

This indicator is calculated by taking the sum of the weighted proportions obtained for the following two indicators: AU_CAM02_1 and AU_CAM03_1. This sum of weighted proportions is then divided by the sum of the weighted number of respondents to these same two indicators. The questions to which these indicators refer are as follows: 'Before giving you any new medicine, how often did hospital staff tell you what the medicine was for?' and 'Before giving you any new medicine, how often did hospital staff describe possible side effects in a way you could understand?'. This composite score calculation methodology is the same as the one used by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).
