About

This indicator is the percentage of students in grades K to 5 who have a healthy weight, based on their height and weight. Survey responses for height and weight of the student are provided by the parent.

Source

New Brunswick Health Council, Student Wellness and Education Survey, Grades 4-5

Calculations

This indicator is calculated by dividing "the number of respondents who reported a height and weight for their child that leads to a BMI (body mass index) within 2 age/gender specific cutoffs" by "the number of respondents who reported a height and weight for their child". The BMI is obtained by dividing the weight in kilograms by the height in square metres. Conversions are applied to obtain the correct unit of measure from the following questions: "Your child’s height, without shoes is: " and "Your child’s height, without shoes is: ".

Notes

The 2019-2020 edition of this survey was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the number of schools that participated is much lower than other editions of the survey, results at the provincial level were deemed not representative of the total student population. Therefore, survey results for New Brunswick, health zones and demographic groups are not available for the 2019-2020 edition. However, results are available for communities in which the number of participating schools was deemed sufficient to be representative of the student population in that community.
