About

This indicator is the percentage of students in grades 4 and 5 who have a moderate level of mental fitness. Students are given a 'total mental fitness score' based on their responses to 9 individual questions, and 2 cutoffs are used to identify students with a moderate level of mental fitness.

Source

New Brunswick Health Council, Elementary Student Wellness Survey

Calculations

This indicator is calculated by dividing the number of respondents who have a total mental fitness score between 2 specified cutoffs by the number of respondents who described their feelings and ideas for at least 5 of the following 9 questionnaire items: 'I feel I do things well at school', 'I like to spend time with my parents', 'I feel I do things well at home', 'I feel I have a choice about when and how to do my school work', 'I like to spend time with my teachers', 'I feel I have a choice about which activities to do with my friends', 'I feel I do things well when I am with my friends', 'I like to spend time with my friends' and 'I feel like I have a choice about when and how to do my household chores'. The response options for these 9 items are not like me, a little like me and a lot like me.

Notes

The 2019-2020 edition of this survey was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the number of schools that participated in 2019-2020 is much lower than other editions of the survey, results at the provincial level were deemed not representative of the total student population. Therefore, survey results for New Brunswick, health zones and demographic groups are not available for the 2019-2020 edition. However, 2019-2020 results are available for communities in which the number of participating schools was deemed sufficient to be representative of the student population in that community.
