To provide a better understanding of local differences, the NBHC presents information at either the health zone level or the community level. The boundaries of the seven health zones were established by provincial legislation, while the 33 communities were created by the NBHC (by further dividing up the seven established health zones).
The community boundaries were determined using the catchment areas of health care centres, community health centres and hospitals. No community has fewer than 5,000 people to ensure data availability, stability and anonymity.

Important note
2023 - In December 2022, an amendment to the Regional Health Authorities Act was enacted that redefines the geographic boundaries of New Brunswick’s 7 health zones.
Accordingly, the various provincial and federal organizations that represent sources of data for the population of New Brunswick will require a period of time to assess and realign with the new geographic realities in the province, as they relate to their own scope of work.
The New Brunswick Health Council will coordinate with the various organizations in charge of population health data, locally, provincially, and federally, to evaluate those amendments in order to make the best decision to ensure its public reporting tools and methods are representative, robust, and aligned in an efficient and effective way.
2018 - The geographic boundaries of these health zones and NBHC communities have been modified since 2018:
- Zone 6 and Zone 7
- NBHC communities of:
- Shippagan
- Tracadie
- Neguac
- Bouctouche
- Salisbury
- Shediac
Users are advised to exercise caution if comparing data from these geographic areas to previous data cycles. For the affected geographic areas, comparisons between data cycles may not be precise.
